Toto is a delightful "grandson" to add to our family. He is quite the little "cut-up" and has decided we are pretty fun to play with. Besides oozing personality, he is such a pretty colt....a long, slender neck, cute little head, and the makings of a big hip. And, he is QUITE innovative! On the first night of his life, he figured out how to nurse on momma with her laying down!
Trixie has always been one to lay down for hours, from the time she was a baby and even before her leg issues surfaced. There seems to be a bit of a "lazy gene" in her pedigree. So, when she lays down for the night, it is often for 8 to 9 hours at a time....laid out completely flat!!! Motherhood has not changed that one bit. The first night of Toto's life, we watched on the TV monitor as he got up after a snooze and began to look for food. Trixie was down for the night. She didn't even bother to raise her head as he circled around her trying to find his milk. Finally, about the time we thought we were going to have to head to the barn to get her up, he found a teat! What a clever little guy he is! So, he now nurses on her multiple times during the night and Trixie never bothers to get up until morning. And after nursing, Toto will lay down in between her legs and curl up with his head on her legs, or lay down in front of her chest and fall asleep with his head on her chin. It is just entirely too cute! HOWEVER, at less than two weeks old, we were completely blown away to catch a glimpse of Toto on the TV/foal camera being just as lazy as his mother. He has now figured out how to lay down and sleep in between Trixie's legs next to her belly, and when he awakes hungry, HE REACHES OVER AND NURSES WITHOUT EVER GETTING UP, on the mare that wont' get up!!!!!!!! What a pair these two make. We have never seen anything like this in our lives.
